The vacuum fluorescent tube, also known as "cold cathode glow discharge indicator tube," "glow digital tube," or "fluorescent digital tube," is a self-luminous display device. During the Cold War, it was widely used as a digital indicator in aerospace applications. Since the fluorescent tube could only display numbers and some special characters, and its internal structure differed from that of a glow tube, it was eventually improved into the vacuum fluorescent display (VFD), allowing people to customize the displayed content. Thus, LGL Studio—a small team of enthusiasts—was born. We aim to bring these niche technologies back into the public eye!
The Unique Glow of VFD
The glow of VFD is not the cold white of LEDs, nor the fiery warmth of Nixie tubes.
It's a The clearly visible grid ignites the phosphor under high temperature as it's bombarded by current. The reason we can't truly capture its beauty in a photo is because the VFD display operates with constantly flowing current and flickers at an extremely high frequency—far too fast for the human eye to perceive.
